Our Services

The Time is Now Learning provides executive function and learning support for secondary students with ADHD, executive function challenges and/or learning disabilities to improve their time-management, organization, reading comprehension, and writing skills.

Executive Function and ADHD Coaching

Students with executive function challenges such as ADHD can experience challenges with concentration, organization, planning, prioritizing, working memory, task initiation and completion, and distractibility. Students may find themselves procrastinating on important academic tasks, cramming for tests, and becoming distracted during class and while reading.

Students with executive function challenges such as ADHD may struggle to perform to their true potential in school. In high school, teens often receive less support and guidance than they did in elementary school, placing adolescents with executive function challenges at risk academically.

In high school, students are expected to

  • demonstrate independent time-management and organizational skills
  • tackle multi-step assignments and demonstrate independent research and editing skills
  • read and critically analyze books, chapters and articles
  • keep track of multiple deadlines
  • sustain focus in longer classes and take notes independently
  • study independently for longer periods for tests and evaluations
  • self-regulate negative emotions and resist distractions
  • advocate for themselves when they experience challenges or setbacks

Challenges with task initiation, organization, planning, prioritizing and sustaining concentration can cause teens to fall behind on schoolwork and/or not perform to their potential on evaluations. This causes stress, frustration, and a feeling of being overwhelmed, all of which can lead to further avoidance of schoolwork as well as a cycle of self-blame and low self-esteem.

In strength-based coaching sessions, students receive support in

  • establishing and persisting toward goals
  • eliminating common distractions
  • breaking assignments down into smaller steps, so they are easier to tackle
  • estimating the time needed to complete certain tasks
  • creating a realistic and manageable study schedule
  • listing and prioritizing academic tasks and responsibilities
  • organizing their environment so that it supports learning

Reading Comprehension and Writing Challenges

Students with reading comprehension challenges may find it takes longer to complete assigned readings as well as to understand and recall key concepts.

Evidence-based reading support can improve students’ reading comprehension

by helping students strengthen the following key reading skills:

  • monitoring their comprehension
  • previewing texts
  • reading with purpose
  • incorporating graphic templates to increase understanding
  • elaborating/ make connections/ analyzing
  • summarizing

Students with writing challenges may struggle to formulate and organize thoughts as well as research, write and revise essays.

Evidence-based writing support includes explicit instruction in the following key writing skills:

  • deconstructing and mapping texts
  • pre-planning
  • organizing
  • drafting
  • monitoring progress
  • revising

Strategies are directly taught and modelled, and students participate in guided practice until they are independent in using the strategies.
